So last I left you our Sabres were 7-0-0, three games later we've continued our success and are now a league leading 10-0-0. As Paul previously mentioned, that ties the NHL record for most consecutive wins to start a season (Toronto Maple Leafs 1993-1994). I pick up at the Bruins game where the Sabres won in comfortable fashion 6-2 while on the road. Of the 6 goals, 9 Sabres tallied at least one point in the game. Chris Drury netted 2 powerplay goals while Brian Campbell had 3 assists and Thomas Vanek 1 goal and 2 assists. Martin Biron was excellent in the nets turning away 24 of the 26 shots he faced. The Sabres also put their powerplay percentage over 20 % converting on 3 of their 7 powerplays. They also improved their Penalty Killing percentage stopping Boston on all 4 of its powerplay opportunities.
We headed to Monday going into Montreal still undefeated. A slow start was ended when a quick wrist by Jiri NovotnyĆ¢€™s shot caught Montreal goalie, Christobal Huet by surprise and trickled into the net. It was his 3rd goal of the year. Drury then picked it up on the penalty kill, scoring his 10th goal of the year shorthanded on a beautiful shot into the top right corner of the net. Pominville would tip in a shot by Briere later on in the period to make it 3-0 Buffalo. Montreal would make the score 3-1 at one point but Miller was again superb in the net making 26 saves on the night. Vanek would also score an empty net goal coming out of the penalty box, his 6th of the year and making the final score 4-1 Buffalo.
Now it was time for our Sabres to tie the record, and they would have to do so against the New York Islanders. Buffalo showed how tough their skating is to beat. Even though they got off to a slow start, Miller came through, making some big saves early on in the game. Once Miller did his job, the 4th line of Peters, Mair and Gaustad was sent out to change the momentum and boy did they ever. Hitting everything that moved and even producing a few quality scoring chances, the 4th line changed the momentum of the game. Kotalik opened the scoring on the powerplay with a beautiful one timer goal from the point that went right through Islander goalie Rick Dipietro. Next came the highlight of the night, as Maxim Afinogenov went blazing by defenseman Brendan Witt with his incredible speed and deked out Dipietro and scoring his 6th goal of the season. Early on in the 3rd period, Pominville would also score, making the final 3-0 Buffalo, and Ryan Miller earning his first shutout of the season and putting the Sabres at 10-0-0.
NHL names the 3 stars of the week, Maxim Afinogenov received top honors in this category being named 1st star of the week as he compiled no less than 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points. He is currently tied with AtlantaĆ¢€™s Marian Hossa for the league lead in points. Also in that category, their a 4 Sabres in the top 15 in points including, Afinogenov, Drury, Vanek, and Briere. I hope we can break this record, I feel we are capable of beating any team in this league without a problem, but its difficult to tell when some team will decided to show up and play great. Being very superstitious I will not make any predictions for the upcoming week, so I leave you with this, GO SABRES!
